Cows and Cow Dogs

Weeks 4 & 5

Four weeks ago the tiny trio arrived. They have been through a lot. Leah still limps and favors her front left leg even after a farrier trimmed her hooves and a mobile livestock vet examined her. We will try some meds to see if it helps with inflammation.

All three have some ringworm also, but poor Leah has it the worst. Apparently it's pretty common in cattle and stress makes it worse. Twice a day I treat several dozen sores on Leah with anti-fungal cream. It takes a while so I sing to her and she seems to like it. What she does not like is being put in the barn alone. She brays loudly, looking for her herd.

On the plus side, all three cows are getting used to us being around them, bringing them goodies, touching them, leading them, and hosing them off when they need it. And Layla has made friends with Jacob. She is a cattle dog after all, and she loves to walk along each one when we lead them in and out of the barn.

Week 5. Another Wednesday rolled around here on the mini ranch. The Zebu are enjoying the Texas heat... and a little water fun from the hose.

Jacob frolics and runs when he gets wet and Rachel joined him today. There was an apparent role reversal when the cows decided to herd the dog.

And finally, Rachel got jealous when I was snapping cow selfies with Leah and tried to lick my phone. Extreme close up below
