The Cows Come Home

Day one at Ranch Kildare. Our new adventure begins and we have no idea what we are doing.

Oh sure, we researched mini cows, visited a mini Zebu ranch, and spent countless hours fixing up our barn and back acres for this. We even posted our cow-nt down on the bulletin board in the kitchen and ginned up lots of excitement. The day finally arrived. The trailer finally arrived. Two heifers and a bull ran out into the pasture. But now what?

We are told to let them get used to their new space (and to us), so we watch the cows run from one corner of the pasture to the other. The kids try to approach them. I try to approach them. We barely get close enough for a good picture. I start to realize that our pasture might be too big.

On the up side, we are getting lots of fresh air and sunshine. And it's a beautiful spring day in Texas.

Day two at Ranch Kildare. We are still patiently waiting to get close to the cows. We are trying to give Jacob, Leah, and Rachel some time to get over the trauma of being loaded into a trailer and dropped off in a new yard with some wanna-be ranchers. And honestly, we are enamored watching them graze and run about.

Everyone wants to be near the Zebus. The kids have taken their school books out to the pasture and are pretending to do math or spelling on this glorious spring day. It might not be fractions or consonant blends but there is plenty to learn outside. And they wait.

Its no surprise that Delaney turns out to be our Zebu whisperer. It was Delaney's dream to have mini Zebu. Actually, at first she wanted chickens. Or goats. Or ducks. Almost any animal beyond the typical cat or dog (though we had to have those too) she felt could satisfy her longing. And then one day a friend mentioned mini cows. Research began, information was gathered, and the rest, as they say, is history.
